Yogi Berra Gave Some Bad Directions

Life is full of crossroads. Do you turn left, turn right, forge straight ahead or stay put? Some decisions we make are of little consequence, but others shape our lives and our entire destiny.
During my 66 years on this planet, one of the first crossroads I faced was what college to attend and what degree program to enroll in. Instead of majoring in political science at Rutgers University and then going on to law school before pursuing a career in politics, I shifted gears at the last minute and enrolled in St. John’s University’s athletic administration program before transferring to Temple University and earning a degree in community recreation. That simple but profound change of direction made a world of difference because my recreation degree landed me my first job at a Christian retirement community, where I learned the skills I needed to start and lead America’s first athletic prison ministry.
Other crossroads in my life included who I was going to marry, where we were going to live, and whether to answer God’s call to full-time ministry, leaving behind a secure and well-paying job. Trust me, those decisions were bathed in prayer because of their importance. And yes, when I finally ran for political office – the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008 and 2010 – I prayed long and hard about that decision, too.
Relocating to Florida in 2011 to launch Risk Takers for Christ? Planting a new church, Midway Bible Fellowship, in 2022? You’d better believe those steps of faith were the result of fervent prayers as well.
Yogi Berra famously said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Known for his “Yogi-isms”, Berra didn’t indicate which fork to take. I guess he figured that you would instinctively and inherently “know” the right path but from my personal experience, such decisions are best bathed in prayer instead of left to chance.
