You Look a Bit Parched There, Pardner!

“Beloved, when we are brought to a thirsty condition, we are sure to turn eagerly to the fountain of life.” – C.H. Spurgeon

For years, I had heard about the “dry heat” in Arizona and New Mexico. I was told that the temperatures may hit triple digits, but because of the relatively low humidity, it doesn’t feel that hot.

Yeah, right!

About 20 years ago, I led one of our prison ministry softball teams on an extended trip to the American Southwest. We played and ministered in correctional institutions throughout Arizona and New Mexico – including federal prisons in Phoenix and Tucson – and it was H-O-T!

Not only that, but it seemed like you couldn’t drink enough water to quench your thirst. I would come off the softball field, grab a thermos, and start drinking… but the water seemed to evaporate halfway down my throat.

So much for “dry” heat!

My friend, we all go through a spiritual desert from time to time when our souls are dry and our spirits are parched. When that happens, the surefire remedy is to seek the nearest oasis – communing with God through prayer, meditating on His Word, and fellowshipping with fellow believers. Before you know it, you will be refreshed and ready to press on in the Lord’s service.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6 (BSB)

“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” Isaiah 55:1 (BSB)
