Would You Pay $600,000 for a Car?

“Scripture is the royal chariot in which Jesus rides… The Scriptures are like the swaddling clothes of the holy child Jesus; unroll them, and there you find your Savior. The essence of the Word of God is Christ.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Last week, I was driving down U.S. 1 in Vero Beach and saw a stylish two-tone car in front of me. Its sides were painted white, but its trunk and roof – and I assume its hood, too, which I couldn’t see from behind – were painted black.
The traffic light ahead of us turned red, which allowed me to creep up close enough to see the distinctive RR insignia, designating this luxury vehicle as a Rolls Royce… one of the most expensive cars in the world. According to Car and Driver, the two-tone Rolls Royce Phantom retails for between $573,000 and $653,000. Even a used one from 2018 will set you back about $300,000.
In its review, Car and Driver described the Phantom as follows…
“This four-door limousine costs over half a million dollars but can be outfitted to each owner's exact specifications. Rear-seat riders can enjoy a pair of massaging bucket seats, a built-in beverage chiller, and rear-seat entertainment displays with live satellite television feeds.”
Noting that the Phantom is meant to be chauffeur-driven, Car and Driver said that “The Phantom goes beyond excess and enters the realm of hyper-luxury, and its wealthy clientele happily pay for the privilege and exclusivity.”
A royal chariot indeed!
And yet, as Charles Spurgeon mentioned in today’s quote, the Holy Bible on which Jesus “rides” and in which He is “swaddled” is far superior to any man-made motor vehicle. It is the inspired, inerrant and eternal Word of God… and you can’t put a price tag on that!
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:1 & 14 (BSB)
