God Hates Spoiled Brats

“Delayed answers often set the heart searching itself and so lead to contrition and spiritual reformation: Deadly blows are then struck at our corruption, and the sinful images are cleansed. The great danger is that men should faint and miss the blessing.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Pity the person whose prayers are answered immediately and completely every time they are offered.

Actually, no such person ever existed aside from the Lord Jesus Christ, because even the most devout and dedicated Christians occasionally have their prayers hindered by unconfessed sin. Those sins are often the reason why God cannot answer as expeditiously as He – and we – would like.

But even if that were not the case and no unconfessed sin existed to “gum up the works”, it would still be better for God to delay His answers on occasion. Otherwise, we would take His kindness and benevolence for granted. Perhaps more importantly, we would not learn the patience and discipline it takes to make a person a mature Christian… and a true prayer warrior.

We all know someone who was given everything they ever wanted in life. All they had to do was ask (or whine) and it was theirs. Maybe that person was an only child with a doting parent or a “trophy” wife with a successful but insecure husband. Whatever the case, that person became a spoiled brat regardless of his or her age.

Remember… God is always more concerned with the finished product and so, He sometimes delays His answers to better and more perfectly conform us to the image of His Son. And while He is doing that, here are a couple of Bible verses for you and I to meditate on…

“Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans 5:3-4 (BSB)

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” James 1:2-4 (NKJV)
