You're Invited to a Birthday Party

“All that He [Christ] has, He shares with His people.” – C.H. Spurgeon
It’s an inside joke that our family never tires of telling…
When our son Chris was little, we threw a birthday party for him and invited some of his close friends from church, school, our neighborhood, and his sports teams. One of them, a boy named Andy, sat next to Chris as he was opening his presents. Every time Chris opened a gift that Andy liked, he said emphatically, “We share, right, Chris?”
Chris was – and is – very generous and so, it wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t let Andy play with some of the toys he received that day. But after the party was over, they remained in Chris’s possession. After all, the party guests had bought them for the birthday boy and expected Chris to keep them, not give them away.
The point that Charles Spurgeon is making in today’s quote is that even though Jesus Christ is the honored guest in heaven, He desires to share everything He has with us. I’ll let the “Prince of Preachers” fill in the details…
The royal crown He has placed upon the head of His Church, granting her a kingdom, and calling her sons a royal priesthood, a generation of priests and kings. He uncrowned Himself that we might have a coronation of glory; He would not sit upon His own throne until He had procured a place upon it for all who overcome by His blood. Crown the head, and the whole body shares the honor.
Here then is the reward of every Christian conqueror! Christ’s throne, crown, scepter, palace, treasure, robes, heritage are yours. He deems His happiness completed by His people sharing it. “The glory that you have given me I have given to them.” (John 17:22) “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11)
The smiles of His Father are all the sweeter to Him because His people share them. The honors of His kingdom are more pleasing because His people appear with Him in glory. More valuable to Him are His conquests since they have taught His people to overcome. He delights in His throne because on it there is a place for them. He rejoices in His royal robes since they cover His people. He delights all the more in His joy because He calls them to enter into it.
“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” I John 3:1 (NKJV)
