“Away, then, all fears – the kingdom is safe in the King’s hands. Let us shout for joy, for the Lord reigns, and His foes shall be as straw for compost.” – C.H. Spurgeon

It is no secret that my all-time political hero is Ronald Wilson Reagan. In fact, I loved “the Gipper” so much that I taught my kids to place their hand over their heart anytime they heard his name mentioned.

I’m only half-kidding…

And so, when President Reagan passed the torch to George H.W. Bush on January 20, 1989, I felt a mixture of deep pride and profound sadness. However, one thing I didn’t experience was a sense of fear. After all, Bush 41 had been vice-president for eight years and before that he had served as a two-term congressman, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, the U.S. Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (C.I.A.)

Never before in American history had someone possessed more experience or been more qualified to serve as president than George Herbert Walker Bush. Simply put, he knew exactly how the federal government operated, and he was on a first-name basis with most of the world’s leaders, too.

Regardless of your political persuasion or whether you agreed with President Bush’s policies, you had to admit that he was competent. In other words, you could lay your head on your pillow at night confident that there was an adult in charge at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Well, my friend, someone far more experienced, competent, and qualified is in control of the entire universe and His name is the Lord God Almighty. His credentials are unmatched, and His power is unparalleled. And speaking of pillows, He doesn’t require a moment’s sleep (see Psalm 121:4). On the contrary, He is “on the job” 24/7, 365.

Yes, as Charles Spurgeon pointed out in today’s quote, the kingdom is indeed safe in the King’s hands, so we can all rest easy tonight… and every night!

“Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!” Revelation 19:6b (NKJV)

- Rev. Dale M. Glading, President
