Vice President WHO???

“The thief on the cross excels Caesar on his throne; Lazarus among the dogs is better than Cicero among the senators; and the most unlettered Christian is in the sight of God superior to Plato.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Many years ago, one of my spiritual mentors told me a story about him and his dad that has stayed with me ever since. Partly because it was funny and partly because it was so meaningful.

Here is how the story goes…

My friend and his dad, both of whom were pastors, were attending a conference in Washinton D.C. in the early 1970s. As they were standing outside their hotel, a black limousine pulled up in front of the convention center across the street and out stepped then-Vice President Spiro Agnew.

“Dad,” my friend asked excitedly, “Do you want to cross the street and meet Vice President Agnew?”

“My son,” his father replied, “We are ministers of the Most High God. Vice President Agnew should want to cross the street to meet us.”

What makes the story funny is that Silas McMurray, the father in the story, was one of the quietest and humblest men you’d ever want to meet. However, he knew Who he served and because of that, he also understood that his position as pastor of a small Baptist church in Blackwood, New Jersey was significantly more important than the one held by the Vice President of the United States.

My friend, if you are a disciple of Jesus Christ, don’t let anyone look down on you. According to 2 Corinthians 5, you are a Minister of Reconciliation and an Ambassador for Christ. That is a pretty impressive job title, if you ask me!

Even better, Titus 3:7 says that we are “heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” You simply can’t put a price tag on that!

“But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God…” John 1:12 (BSB)

“Elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching…” I Timothy 5:17 (BSB)
