Truth or Consequences

“Scripture alone is absolute truth, essential truth, decisive truth, authoritative truth, undiluted truth, eternal, everlasting truth.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Do you remember the TV Game show “Truth or Consequences”? It actually aired on NBC radio first, from 1940 to 1957 with Ralph Edwards serving as host. When it began its 38-year television run, Edwards again served as the original host, but most people associate Bob Barker with the program. Barker emceed Truth or Consequences from 1956 to 1975 before moving on to The Price Is Right.

The show featured contestants being asked an obscure question after which they were only given two seconds to provide an answer before "Beulah the Buzzer" sounded. When they failed to answer correctly, they were then required to perform some sort of crazy stunt that qualified them to receive a cash prize or other type of gift.

In John 14:6, Jesus Christ refers to Himself as “the way, the truth, and the life.” He then adds that “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” That’s pretty specific and pretty exclusive.

Then, in John 17:17 during His high priestly prayer, Jesus says that “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” Again, a very, very definitive statement with no exceptions.

Finally, in John 8:31-32, Jesus tells His disciples that “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” That’s quite a promise!

And yet, the world is filled with people today who are desperately searching for truth anywhere and everywhere except in church, except in the Bible, and except in Jesus. Sadly, if they continue to reject the Truth – which is that Jesus is God in the flesh who lived a perfect life and died for their sins – they will face the consequences.

Tragically, those consequences won’t involve a crazy stunt or a funny gag. Quite on the contrary, those who do not place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire (see Revelation 20:15).

My friend, life isn’t a game show, it’s more like reality TV. Please trust Jesus TODAY!

“Jesus answered, ‘For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.’” John 18:37 (BSB)
