The Secret of the Triangle

“If we were nearer to Jesus, we would be nearer to one another.” – C.H. Spurgeon
I’m sure you have seen the graphic which depicts a triangle with God at the top, the husband at the bottom left-hand corner, and the wife at the bottom right-hand corner. As the husband and the wife grow closer to God, guess what happens? The distance between them also diminishes, which means that as they grow closer to God, they also grow closer to each other.
However, if the husband and the wife simply try to move closer to each other along the bottom line of the triangle, they remain the same distance from God as they were when they started. What a shame that would be!
I can tell you from personal experience that, as Deanna and I have grown closer to God over the past 40 years, we have also grown closer to each other. I honestly love God more today than ever and am walking in closer fellowship with Him than ever before… and as a result, I am more in love with my beautiful bride than ever before, too. It’s funny how that works, but it’s absolutely true.
My friend, if you want your marriage to last, focus on your walk with God first and your relationship with your spouse second. Doing it the other way around is a recipe for disaster, dissension… and divorce.
“Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40 (BSB)
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” Ephesians 5:25 (BSB)
“Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior.” Ephesians 5:22-23 (BSB)

P.S. This triangle formula also works with friendships!
