The Chicken or the Egg?

“Look to Jesus and believe on Him, and you shall make proof of your election directly, for as surely as you believe, you are elect.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Which came first: the chicken or the egg?
We’ve all heard that question and maybe we’ve even been asked it ourselves. Of course, the correct – and biblical – answer is that the chicken came first, having been created by God either on Day Five with all the fish and the birds or on Day Six with the other living creatures. Once there were chickens… along came eggs.
The same thing applies to election and salvation.
If you are a Calvinist, you believe that God chose who He was going to save from before the beginning of time. But how do you know if you are among God’s elect?
Simple! If you believe in Jesus and have trusted Him as your Savior and Lord, that means that you were elected by God to do so.
It may sound complicated – or perhaps like circuitous logic – but it actually makes sense if you take it (and Spurgeon’s explanation) at face value. God, the Father sent God, the Holy Spirit to soften our heart and open our spiritual eyes so that we would accept the free gift of salvation offered by Jesus, God the Son. When we understand that process and accept it by faith, we are saved… which also means that we were elect (or destined to be saved).
Got it? If not, try reading Romans 10:9-13, which explains God’s plan of salvation as simply and clearly as possible.
“Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure…” 2 Peter 1:10a (NKJV)
“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.” John 3:14-15 (BSB)
