“He who kneels the most stands the best.” – C.H. Spurgeon
Last week, I saw a meme on Facebook that I liked so much that I shared it on my own page. It had to do with baseball and went like this…
Things I miss:
Guys hitting .300
Aces throwing complete games
Less showboating
Scheduled doubleheaders
Small ball
Plunking dudes who showboat
Infield warm-up
Less egos, more humility
Decent giveaways
Better umpires
Stirrups
If you’re not a baseball fan, especially an “old school” one, some of those aspects of the game probably don’t resonate with you. However, for the purpose of today’s devotional, let me highlight three of them.
Webster’s defines a “showboat” as “one who tries to attract attention by conspicuous behavior” and “showboating” as “behaving in a conspicuous or ostentatious manner”. Synonyms for showboating include “showing off” and “being a hot dog”.
Back when I was a kid, ballplayers were far more humble and far more team-oriented. Today, it seems like they all have a master’s degree in self-promotion.
The Bible teaches humility, not pridefulness, and I wish a lot of today’s athletes, politicians, and entertainers would apply God’s Word in their daily lives.
“Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.” Proverbs 18:12 (BSB)
“All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’ Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.” I Peter 5:5-6 (NIV)
