Several weeks ago, I wrote a devotional about Helen Keller. She lived a remarkable life and – much to her credit – overcame huge obstacles such as blindness and deafness to accomplish great things and become an international celebrity.
However, I also highlighted some of Keller’s negative qualities which included her extremely liberal political views as well as her support of eugenics, the heinous practice of selective breeding to supposedly eliminate diseases and those carrying “undesirable” human characteristics. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was a huge proponent of eugenics. So was Adolf Hitler, whose plan to create a master Aryan race resulted in the extermination of six million Jews.
Keller’s religious beliefs were also decidedly off-base. When she was young, her teacher Anne Sullivan introduced her to Phillips Brooks, an Episcopal priest, who influenced her greatly. In 1927, Keller wrote her spiritual autobiography, My Religion, which advocated the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, a Swedish theologian and mystic. Among Swedenborg’s multiple heresies was that Jesus personally appeared to him and instructed him to write The Heavenly Doctrine, a blasphemous book that proclaims that the Second Coming of Christ has already happened and the Last Judgment occurred in 1757. Swedenborg also claimed to have visited heaven and hell on many different occasions to speak with angels, demons, and other spirits.
Keller described the core of her religious belief in these words: “He has provided religion of some kind everywhere, and it does not matter to what race or creed anyone belongs if he is faithful to his ideals of right living.”
That, my friends, is 100% unscriptural. Sincerely believing the wrong thing will buy you a ticket straight to hell which, unless she repented of her sins and faulty theology, is sadly where I believe Helen Keller resides today… and for all eternity.
