Not ANOTHER Car Wash!

“Digging out the foundation is the first thing in building—and a thorough sense of sin is one of the earliest works of grace in the heart.” – C.H. Spurgeon
I was at the post office the other day when a lady walked in and asked no one in particular, “Does anyone know what they are building in the parking lot?”
For weeks, heavy equipment operated by construction workers has been excavating a giant hole in the lot adjacent to the post office, obviously preparing the ground for the foundation of a new building. However, no one seems to know what that new building will be.
“Maybe it will be another car wash,” someone said sarcastically, because Vero Beach is overflowing with them.
“Yeah, or maybe another dollar store or storage facility,” someone else chimed in since they are both a dime a dozen in Indian River County.
“It might even be another AutoZone, O’Reilly’s, or Advance Auto Parts,” a third person said rather tongue-in-cheek.
Just like a new home or business requires a strong and solid foundation, so must the foundation of sin be destroyed in each of our hearts and lives when we first come to saving faith in Christ. The existing ground must be torn up and rent asunder, and an entirely new spiritual foundation laid.
Here is how Charles Spurgeon describes those “demolition” and “construction” phases…
“When a man sees himself to be completely lost and ruined, covered with the defilement of sin, with no part free from pollution; when he disclaims all righteousness of his own and pleads guilty before the Lord, then he is clean through the blood of Jesus and the grace of God.”
“Hidden, unfelt, unconfessed iniquity is the true leprosy of the soul; but when sin is seen and felt, it has received its deathblow, and the Lord looks with eyes of mercy upon the afflicted soul. Nothing is more deadly than self-righteousness or more hopeful than contrition.”
“For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” I Cor. 3:11 (BSB)
