“We have gone through many trials but never to our detriment, always to our advantage; and the conclusion from our past experience is that He who has been with us in six troubles will not forsake us in the seventh.” – C.H. Spurgeon

I love that last line… “He who has been with us in six troubles will not forsake us in the seventh.”

What would make you think that the same God who saw you through not just six trials but countless ones would suddenly throw up His hands in disgust, frustration, or fatigue and say, “Enough is enough”?

And yet, that is sometimes how we treat the “Shepherd and Overseer” of our souls (I Peter 2:25), the same God who describes Himself in Jeremiah 31:3 as having loved Israel’s remnant “with an everlasting love”.

In that latter passage, God says that He drew the Jews to Himself with “lovingkindness”… and He operates the same way with us. Jesus – God in the flesh – promised to never leave nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). In fact, He is described as a friend who sticks closer than a brother in Proverbs 18:24.

It’s only natural to doubt God’s love for us when we focus on ourselves. After all, we are thoroughly unlovable, at least from a spiritual perspective. But the key is to focus on God’s character, not ours.

When you start doubting God’s love – and whether He will deliver you yet again from whatever mess you’ve gotten yourself into – try reading the Song of Solomon. It paints a vivid picture of Christ’s passionate love for His bride, the Church, of which you and I are a part.

As long as I live, I will never cease to love, protect, and provide for my beautiful bride, Deanna. Likewise, Jesus will never stop loving and caring for you and me.

“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” I John 3:1a (NKJV)
