How I Lost $100...

“God never relinquishes the search until the chosen are sought out effectually. They are not a people sought today and cast away tomorrow.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Learn from my mistake…

A few months ago, Deanna and I came home from a trip to Pennsylvania to see her mom. We didn’t arrive home until after midnight, but instead of going straight to bed, I foolishly decided to sort through our mail.

As I separated the bills and other important stuff from the junk mail, I made a pile to throw into the recycle bucket, which was to be picked up in the morning. Apparently, into that mix went an envelope that contained a cash offering to our church of $100.

Ouch!

That night… the next morning… and for several days afterwards… I retraced my steps, holding out hope that the envelope would turn up somewhere, but it didn’t. Finally, I came to the sad conclusion that the $100 had ended up in a local landfill or recycling plant and so, I replaced the money out of my own pocket.

Lesson learned: don’t sort mail when you’re mentally and physically exhausted!

But there is a second lesson to be learned from my unfortunate experience and it’s this: God never gives up looking for lost sinners and wayward saints. In actuality, because He is both omniscient and omnipresent, He knows exactly where we are at all times. However, He still searches for us because He longs to bring us into right relationship with Himself.

That’s why God called out “Where are you?” to Adam in the Garden of Eden. He knew that Adam was hiding in the bushes out of shame; He just wanted him to admit it. Likewise, the father of the Prodigal Son was constantly on the lookout for his wayward child and when he returned broken and repentant, his father was filled with compassion… running to him, hugging and kissing him, and restoring him to his former position.

My friend, if you don’t know Jesus as your Savior, rest assured that the “Hound of Heaven” is tracking you down even as we speak. And if you’re already saved but have wandered off course, it’s time to come home.

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Luke 19:10 (KJV)
