Grueling Trials and Gory Details

“The Lord sometimes allows His people to be driven into a corner that they may learn how necessary He is to them.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Boy, oh, boy… can I relate to today’s quote!

I will spare you the gory details because you may be going through a similar – or even far more grueling – trial yourself these days, but suffice it to say that the past several months have been anything but a picnic as I have been dealing with a series of personal attacks that have caused me a lot of stress and many sleepless nights. In fact, I am writing this devotional message at 2:40 AM on such a night when my brain won’t “turn off” because of the relentless “fiery darts of the wicked one” (see Ephesians 6:16).

And so, here I sit, in front of my laptop… or as Charles Spurgeon would say, driven into a corner… learning yet again how much I need God. Sometimes, there is no One and no place to turn to but Him, which isn‘t such a bad place to be after all.

He alone knows the truth because he alone IS the Truth. That means my job (and yours) when we are oppressed is to let Him reveal the truth in His time and in His way. That doesn’t mean that we can’t defend ourselves against unfounded accusations that are demonstrably false. However, it does mean that we must ultimately leave the results to Him.

When peace like a river attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
"It is well, it is well with my soul."

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control:
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and has shed his own blood for my soul.

Take my word for it… verses 3 and 4 are even better!

“From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” Psalm 61:2 (NKJV)
