“If we remember that all the trees of earth are marked for the woodman’s axe, we will not be so ready to build our nests in them.” – C.H. Spurgeon

I love this quote because it reinforces a spiritual truth that is deep and profound and yet, simple and elementary at the same time.

You see, my friend, whether you and I live to be 70, 80, 90 or 100; someday God will call all of us home. As the old hymn reminds us…

This world is not my home, I'm just a passing through
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue;
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore.

The same goes for everything material in this world, too… not just people. As the Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:18… “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Isaiah 40:6-7 states that, “All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, When the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass.” I Peter 1:24 echoes the same theme and quotes some of the same language.

Psalm 102:25-26 and Psalm 103:15-16 also reinforce the transience and temporal nature of man – and the earth itself – compared to the Almighty and Everlasting Father.

Considering that man and his deeds all have a limited “shelf life” and so does this world and everything in it, we would be fools to “hang our hats” on life’s fleeting aspects such as youth, beauty, health and wealth. Instead, we should be like the wise man who built his house upon the rock – the Lord Jesus Christ – and live our lives from an eternal perspective.

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be required of you. Then who will own what you have accumulated?’” Luke 12:20 (BSB)
