Fly Me to the Moon

“Certainly all historical experience confirms the truth that man would not have attained the possible unless time and again he had reached out for the impossible. But to do that a man must be a leader, and not only a leader but a hero as well, in a very sober sense of the word.” – Max Weber

O.K., I need a volunteer. Actually, three of them.

I need three people willing to strap themselves into small seats atop a rocket 111 meters (363 feet) tall, about the height of a 36-story-tall building… and 18 meters (60 feet) taller than the Statue of Liberty.

The rocket weighs 2.8 million kilograms (6.2 million pounds), the weight of about 400 elephants, and generates 34.5 million newtons (7.6 million pounds) of thrust at launch, creating more power than 85 Hoover Dams. When fully fueled, the rocket will contain 1.5 million gallons of highly explosive rocket fuel, burning through it at a rate of 20 tons per second.

Upon liftoff, the three volunteers will travel 239,000 miles through space at speeds between 3,400 mph and 25,200 mph… only to turn around and retrace their steps after spending 21 hours and 36 minutes on the surface of the moon.

Oh, and by the way, this has never been done before in the history of mankind.

Not only did Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins accept that historic challenge, but so did the three-man back-up crew of James Lovell, Fred Haise, and William Anders.

My friend, God may not be calling you to fly to the moon or Mars or some other planet, but I am willing to bet that He has a very important mission for you to complete for His glory. For me, it was to launch America’s first-ever athletic prison ministry in 1987 and to see it through its early years of growth and development before passing the torch to someone else so I could accept my next assignment.

Just report for duty and see where He sends you. It could be across the globe or across the street to share Christ with your neighbor.

“While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’” Acts 13:2 (BSB)

- Rev. Dale M. Glading, President
