“We are constantly opposed and yet perpetually preserved!” – C.H. Spurgeon
A Christian brother who runs an orphanage and school in Kenya posted the following message on Facebook yesterday. He also is a high-ranking prison official there, which is how I met him during a mission trip to Kenya in 2014.
“When you’re making a difference for God’s purposes, if you are a force for God’s kingdom, and living like salt and light in this world, know that you will be attacked. You will. No doubt. Stay aware, do not be surprised, opposing forces will try to stop your influence for Christ. But they do not have to win. And we need not be afraid, for the Lord our God fights for us. He is on our side.”
I needed to hear those words of encouragement because during my 40 years in ministry and my three political campaigns, I have been attacked more times than I can count. You expect that kind of thing in politics, especially from your opponents, but I have found ministry to be just as warlike. In fact, I didn’t know the meaning of the words “spiritual warfare” until I entered full-time ministry in 1994, after which the attacks started coming fast and furiously.
More recently, I’ve endured a series of personal attacks for the way I’ve handled my elderly mother’s care, despite the undeniable fact that she has improved dramatically – both physically and mentally – since I started making all her medical decisions. Sadly, my primary antagonists have been two of my own siblings… and I can’t begin to tell you how deeply those false allegations have hurt.
My friend, if you are being persecuted for doing good, please know that you are not alone. Know too that Jesus sees your pain and hears your anxious cries. Soon – in His perfect timing – He will deliver you while putting your accusers to shame.
While you wait, here are a few Bible verses to encourage you…
“What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31 (BSB)
“If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.” Proverbs 25:21-22 (BSB)
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (BSB)
