“Every true heir of heaven knows that it is God who planted him.” – C.H. Spurgeon
A couple months ago, I was at CVS buying some Pepto Bismol for my acid reflux that has since been treated with a higher dose of Omeprazole. While there, I saw a clearance bin that had a bunch of ceramic pots with seeds and potting soil in them. Not just any seeds, but garden herbs like basil, chives, and thyme.
Knowing that Deanna likes to garden – and is an excellent cook, too – I bought one of each (at 75% off, how could I resist?) Deanna put them on the windowsill in our kitchen where they get a lot of sunlight and the seeds started sprouting within days. It’s been fun to watch… and it will be even more fun to taste the herbs in some future meal.
Obviously, it didn’t take a master gardener to grow these herbs because the pots came self-contained. All Deanna had to do was mix the ingredients together, add a little water, and voila!
Unlike growing herbs – or any type of plant, for that matter – spiritual gardening takes a very special touch. In fact, only the Master Gardener Himself can breathe life into a human soul and only Jesus Christ’s shed blood can redeem that same soul from the pit of hell.
That’s why the Apostle Paul refused to take credit for any of the converts he led to saving faith in Christ. He wrote in I Corinthians 3:6, “I planted the seed and Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.”
My friend, if you have trusted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord, it is because the Holy Spirit drew you irresistibly to God, convicting you of your sins, and leading you not only to genuine repentance but also to genuine faith. As God promises in Ezekiel 36:26, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
Praise God that the Master Gardener is also a World-Class Heart Surgeon!
