Do You Believe in Coincidences?

“Do not let your prayers be all about your own sins, your own desires, your own imperfections, your own trials, but let them climb the starry ladder and get up to Christ Himself, and then as you draw near to the blood-sprinkled mercy-seat, offer this prayer continually: ‘Lord, extend the kingdom of Your dear Son.’”– C.H. Spurgeon

Do you believe in coincidences?

I don’t.

As someone who believes strongly in God’s omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence – not to mention His complete sovereignty – I firmly believe that He is in total control of all matters in heaven and on earth.

And so, IMHO (in my humble opinion), when Jesus taught His disciples how to pray in Matthew 6, it was not a coincidence that He started with the following words…

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

In other words, Jesus wanted His disciples to focus their attention – and their prayers – on God first. Then and only then did He direct them to begin petitioning their Heavenly Father for their personal needs.

Remember, my friend, that “Thy kingdom come and Thy will be done” should always precede “Give us this day our daily bread.”

“Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.’” Matthew 22:37-38 (BSB)

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 (BSB)
