Chicken Nuggets vs. Pheasant Under Glass

As I grow older, I find that I prefer foods that have a little more “bite” to them. I guess that’s because – starting around age 40 for women and age 50 for men – our taste buds begin to shrink in size and decrease in number. According to experts, sweet and salty tastes are the first to fade, which is one reason why seniors tend to add extra sugar to their drinks and extra salt to their food.
The other day, Deanna baked some BBQ chicken wings (with lots of herbs and spices added) and served them with some green bean marinated in a vinegar-based dressing… and my taste buds were singing! I followed that up with some berry-flavored ice cream with caramel sauce and let me tell you, I was one happy camper!
As Samuel Rutherford, a 17th century Scottish minister and theologian, mentioned in today’s quote, our “spiritual taste buds” – having dined on the manna provided by God’s Word and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit – should find the offerings of this world distasteful to say the least. Only Jesus can truly satisfy our soul’s appetite and settling for anything less than close and intimate communion with Him is like wolfing down chicken nuggets when pheasant under glass or some other delicacy is on the menu.

“O true believer, called by grace and washed in the precious blood of Jesus, you have tasted a better drink than the muddy river of this world's pleasure. You have fellowship with Christ; you have obtained the joy of seeing Jesus and resting in His loving embrace. Do the trifles, the songs, the honors, the merriment of this earth content you after that? Have you eaten the bread of angels, and can you live on scraps?”
My friend, please don’t settle for spiritual scraps. Instead, dine with Jesus and feast on His Word!
