“We don’t follow what society dictates; we follow what God says.” – Bob Williamson

“What do you think about women pastors,” I asked my Sunday School class about 10 years ago.

“Well, I think it’s OK,” one person said.

“I think it’s OK, too” another person added.

“Under the right circumstances, I think it’s just fine,” a third person chimed in.

Having let everyone speak their piece and share their opinions, I lowered the boom. “I don’t mean to upset or insult anyone here,” I said with a smile, “but it really doesn’t matter what you think. All that matters is what God’s Word says. And God’s Word says that in order to serve as a pastor, you have to be the husband of one wife.”

As you can imagine, the room got rather quiet… but my point got across loud and clear. In this day and age when politically correctness has infiltrated the pulpit, seminaries, and yes, Sunday School classrooms, people seem to care more about being accepted than they do about being biblically correct. And so, they are willing to water down the qualifications for a pastor as well as create alternate routes to heaven… despite Jesus saying emphatically in John 14:6 “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Did I just step on a few toes of people who think their good works will grant them access through the pearly gates? Maybe so, but what is more loving: telling someone a lie or telling them the truth? And the truth of the matter is that we are all sinners and need to repent and trust Jesus as our Savior and Lord or we will never catch a glimpse of heaven, let alone live there forever.

My friend, please don’t “go with the flow” when it comes to the secular humanism that is creeping into our churches. God’s Word – and His standards – haven’t changed and they never will. Meanwhile, man’s morals (or lack thereof) change almost daily.

“Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.” Acts 17:11 (BSB)
