Will There Be Shoo-fly Pies in Heaven?

“Our Father refreshes us on the journey with some pleasant inns, but will not encourage us to mistake them for home.” – C.S. Lewis
Although the vast majority of our vacations have been spent camping, Deanna and I have occasionally enjoyed staying at a bed and breakfast. Several of them were in the Poconos, one was in Chestertown MD, and a few more have been in Florida.
Our most recent stay at a B&B was a rather unconventional one. We were traveling to New Jersey for my mother’s birthday, to Delaware to attend a nephew’s wedding, and to Pennsylvania to visit Deanna’s parents. And so, we decided to find a location equidistant to all three destinations.
Since we had a traveling party of eight – including two adult children, our son-in-law and three grandchildren – we decided to rent a farmhouse in Lancaster County PA… and what a great decision it turned out to be! Our rooms were simple but clean, and the bountiful breakfasts featured fresh fruit and homemade baked goods. Best of all, each morning Brady, Sadie and Levi got to feed and play with the 13 cats, feed the chickens and collect their eggs.
This little oasis in the rolling hills of Amish country was a real highlight of our trip. However, the lush cornfields and the meandering brooks pale in comparison with what we, as believers, will someday experience in heaven.
A 12-layered wall constructed with precious jewels… 12 gates, each consisting of a single pearl and guarded by an angel… streets of pure gold, transparent as glass. Need I go on?
Relaxing on a porch swing while watching horse and buggies clop up and down a country road was a real treat. But compared to Glory? Not…even…close.
In fact, I’ll bet the shoo-fly pies in heaven are even better than the ones on earth!
“But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen. Nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’” I Corinthians 2:9 (NKJV)
