Tubing in a Thunderstorm

“God controls the storms and He determines what level of impact they will have on your life. Stand firm and trust Him to get you to the destiny He has preordained for you.” – Os Hillman

About 20 years ago, our family was vacationing in upstate New York. We had just finished camping in the Niagara Falls area before heading into Canada for a few days. Then, on our way back to New Jersey, we stopped in Lake George.

While there, we decided to take a tubing trip down a nearby river. Not being a swimmer, Deanna stayed back at our trailer along with Matt, who preferred to fish. And so, Bethany, Chris and I boarded our tubes and, as Jackie Gleason used to say, “away we go!”

The first part of the trip was relaxing and enjoyable as we passed some beautiful scenery. However, before too long, the skies started to darken and it was apparent that a storm was about to hit. Since we were still miles from our destination, I had to make a split-second decision in order to protect our kids.

Seeing an overpass just ahead, I instructed Bethany and Chris to paddle towards it. With just seconds to spare, we arrived at the bridge and took shelter along the riverbank while thunder and lightning put on a spectacular – if somewhat unnerving – show.

Once the storm had passed, we boarded our tubes once more and floated down to our campground safe and sound. Unknown to us, while we were away Matt had walked around a bend in the river searching for a better fishing spot. When Deanna lost sight of him, she got in our SUV and frantically searched until she found him.

Back at our trailer, we recounted our harrowing experiences and then breathed a collective sigh of relief, thankful that God had protected and delivered all five of us.

Aren’t you glad that He controls not only the weather, but also life’s storms?

“He calms the storm, so that its waves are still.” Psalm 107:29 (NKJV)

“And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain.” Isaiah 4:6 (NKJV)
