Slaying Modern-Day Giants

“Never be afraid to stand with the minority when the minority is right, for the minority which is right will one day be the majority.” – William Jennings Bryan
On Wednesday evenings, I join my church’s youth group as one of the leaders. A few weeks ago, we began a series to take a detailed look at ten of the most popular stories in the Bible. The first week, we studied I Samuel 17, the account of David and Goliath.
As we know, David arrives at the Israelite camp with provisions for his older brothers. While there, he hears the Philistine champion, Goliath, mock the Israelite army. Though all the soldiers cower in fear, David seizes the opportunity to challenge the giant, for this enemy defies the armies of Israel and disgraces their God.
With just a sling and five stones, David topples Goliath and cuts off his head. The Philistines, seeing their hero die, retreat, and are quickly pursued by the Israelites.
Now, if you are like me, you might imagine yourself in David’s position. We wish for the chance to challenge Goliath in the name of the Lord Almighty, and triumph over him.
But, we do have this opportunity. Though our enemy may not come in the form of a literal giant, Satan is certainly working through countless means in our world. We, as Christians, serve in the army of the Lord, and each day His name is being ridiculed.
William Faulkner wrote, ““Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world...would do this, it would change the earth.”
Today, we fight for the ability to pray and read the Bible in public schools. We stand for life and the sanctity of marriage. We uphold traditional values and God’s design for this world. Our “giants” are many and we need to have the attitude of David.
“Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hand.’” I Samuel 17:45-47
