I Hate Your Guts

“It is a sad dishonor to a child of God to be the world's favorite.” – C.H. Spurgeon

A friend from our former community posted the following meme on Facebook recently…

“It turns out that when asked who your favorite child is, you’re supposed to pick one of your own. I know that now.” When I read it, I couldn’t stop laughing.

Deanna and I have been blessed with three kids and six grandchildren and we love them all equally. We couldn’t be prouder of our adult children and those six grandkids put a smile on our face – and joy in our heart – every time we see them.

Deanna and I also have been blessed with a host of friends, the vast majority of whom are fellow believers. From my experience, once you come to saving faith in Jesus Christ, you tend to gravitate to people with similar beliefs. We dearly cherish these friendships, some of which are several decades old.

That being said, I know at least a few people who don’t hold me in the highest regard. Not so much for Deanna, who is much nicer than me, but I have stepped on a few toes in my many years of ministry and political campaigning. Oh well, those slights usually weren’t intentional.

But as Charles Spurgeon said in today’s quote – and in the one below – certain elements in the world will always despise a true Christ follower. Your light exposes their darkness, and your faith convicts their conscience. When that happens, take heart, my friend. It simply means that you are becoming more peculiar (see I Peter 2:9) and more like Jesus, Whom the world hated, too (see John 15:18).

Here is how the “Prince of Preachers” put it…

“It is a very bad omen to hear a wicked world clap its hands and shout "Well done" to the Christian man. He may begin to look to his character and wonder whether he has been doing wrong when the unrighteous give him their approval. Let us be true to our Master and have no friendship with a blind and base world that scorns and rejects Him. Far be it from us to seek a crown of honor where our Lord found only a crown of thorns.”

“And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.” Matthew 10:22 (NKJV)
