Fracturing Your Femur

“Godly success involves a partnership between you and God. Success in God's economy means achieving the purpose for which God made you. That purpose can never be discovered without seeking Him with a whole heart. You may achieve great things without seeking God, but you will never achieve the things God set out for you to achieve without seeking Him. Unless you seek Him, you may find yourself one day climbing to the top of the ladder only to find it leaning against the wrong wall.” – Os Hillman

Over the past few years, several of my friends and family members have fallen off ladders. One broke his elbow, and another fractured his femur. A third broke some ribs and multiple bones in his leg.

All three of these men were engaged in worthwhile activities, from cleaning out gutters to doing general home maintenance. However, I am sure that they now wish they had hired a repair man instead of trying to do the job themselves.

Imagine, if you will, that the man who fell while cleaning out his gutter realized – a little too late – that his ladder had been leaning against the wrong wall the whole time. I suppose that would have made his injury even more painful, at least to his ego.

And yet, many people go through life climbing a ladder that is perched – make that, tottering – against the wrong wall. Instead of seeking God’s will for their lives, they mindlessly chase after money, power and position. Tragically, even if they beat the odds and reach the top rung, they soon find that the “success” they sought wasn’t very satisfying.

The truth of the matter is that fame fades, fortunes – especially in today’s economy – can be lost overnight, and youthful looks are even more fleeting. Just ask Heather Locklear, who went from being a teen heartthrob to being arrested for domestic abuse and placed in a psychiatric hospital. Or Kevin Spacey, who just a few years ago was one of Hollywood’s richest and most acclaimed actors. Today, he is a pariah in the entertainment industry – just like producer Harvey Weinstein – awaiting trial on sexual abuse allegations.

My friend, before you start climbing your life’s ladder, make sure it (and you) are leaning on God and His eternal truths. That’s the only way to ensure that your footing is secure… and so is your eternal destination.

“For no other foundation can anyone lay that that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” I Corinthians 3:11 (NKJV)
