“During their lifetimes, every man and woman will stumble across a great opportunity. Sadly, most of them will simply pick themselves up, dust themselves down and carry on as if nothing ever happened.” – Sir Winston Churchill

Remember the song by Paul McCartney and Wings called, “Let ‘em In”? Along with “//Silly Love Songs”//, it was the most popular cut on the album, “Wings At The Speed Of Sound”, released on March 26, 1976. McCartney included that hit song on six subsequent albums, including a remastered version in 2014. Its lyrics were fairly simplistic…

Someone’s knockin’ at the door

Somebody’s ringin’ the bell

Someone’s knockin’ at the door

Somebody’s ringin’ the bell

Do me a favor

Open the door and let ‘em in

The rest of the song includes veiled references to an eclectic cast of characters including “Sister Suzie, Brother John, Martin Luther, Phil and Don, Brother Michael, Auntie Gin, Uncle Ernie and Uncle Lin.” I don’t know about you, but I’m not so sure I would open the door if any of those folks came calling.

However, I will be forever glad that I opened the door to my heart when Jesus Christ came knocking in March 1977. I am also grateful that He came knocking again in April 1982, wanting full ownership of my life. Up till then, I had invited Him into the “house of my heart”, but there were still a few rooms that I keep off-limits. I finally gave up the keys to the last of those rooms in September 1986 and when I did, He presented me with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Simply put, Jesus granted me the chance to combine my love for Him and my love for sports, and to use that “marriage” for His glory. Nine months later, I led a Christian softball team into Bayside State Prison in Leesburg NJ and shared my faith with a group of inmates. Eight of them trusted Christ as Savior and – with a few exceptions – I haven’t looked back since.

Is Jesus knocking on the door of your heart today? If so, I beg you to let Him in. And if He’s already living in your “heart’s house”, please be sure that He has the key – the only key – to each and every room.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come into him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20 (NKJV)
