“Do not be afraid; our fate cannot be taken from us; it is a gift.” - Dante Alighieri, Inferno

One of my favorite songs in Christian music is Chris Tomlin’s “Whom Shall I Fear”. It is a beautiful reminder that God is with us at all times and in all things. Tomlin writes, “Whom shall I fear? I know who goes before me. I know who stands behind. The God of angel armies is always by my side. The one who reigns forever, He is a friend of mine. The God of angel armies, is always by my side.”

David, a man familiar with danger, took great comfort in the protection of the Lord. Psalm 27:1-5 reads, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in His temple. For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will lift me high upon a rock.”

In the Gospel of John, Jesus encourages His disciples by emphasizing that He goes before them. John 16:33 says, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

What have we to fear? The God we serve is the Eternal, Almighty Creator and King of heaven and earth. Psalm 93:1-5 declares, “The LORD reigns; He is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed; He has put on strength as His belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting. The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty! Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O LORD, forevermore.”

“God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.” Psalm 47:8 ESV
