“God does not give His words merely to keep us quiet and to keep us hopeful for a while with the intention of putting us off in the end; but when He speaks, it is because He means to do as He has said.” – C.H. Spurgeon

On a recent episode of Blue Bloods, the mother of a 14-year-old girl who was kidnapped by a Mexican cartel is caught up in a sting operation. While looking for her daughter at a fleabag motel in New York City, she becomes a potential target of the arresting officers. Pointing a gun to her own head, she refuses to put it down until Jamie Reagan, the police commissioner’s son, agrees to help her find her daughter.

Although he is generally honest to a fault, Jamie has no reason to keep his word which was given under duress. After all, his fellow officers would understand that Jamie made the promise in an attempt to deescalate the situation… and to save the mother’s life. And yet, because he is a “Reagan”, Jamie feels honor bound to look for the daughter and reunite her with her mother.

As with most episodes of Blue Bloods, there is a happy ending. Danny Reagan, Jamie’s older brother, diffuses a bomb that the girl was forced to wear as a vest, and she is soon wrapped in the loving arms of her mother. All’s well that ends well.

God is even more honor bound than Jamie Reagan, Danny Reagan, Frank Reagan (the commissioner), and the entire Reagan clan put together. Whereas they, as a staunch Irish Catholic family, are duty-bound to follow the dictates of their church, God is under no such constraints. He simply keeps His Word because He is God. It is His immutable nature to always be honest and forthright, as well as holy and just.

And so, my friend, when God makes you a promise, you can take it to the bank!

“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” Numbers 23:19 (NKJV)

“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” 2 Corinthians 1:20 (NKJV)
